Teaser Trailer Conventions

What is a teaser trailer and what is it used for:

  • A teaser trailer is a trailer that does not give away any significant story line plots to do with the actual film.

  • Only some, if any characters will be shown in it to keep as little known about the storyline of the film as possible.

  • Teaser trailers are released long before the main production and are used to interest an audience in an attempt to raise hype of the production.

  • Teaser trailers typically last between 30-60seconds long and are usually paced fast throughout them or start off slow and the speed of editing picks up.

  • What footage is in the film may not necessarily appear in the actual film, the teaser trailer is designed to make its audience intrigued into what the film is about instead of showing the audience too much about the film.

A teaser trailer is a short trailer that’s used to advertise an upcoming film; they are usually made around a year before the film comes out and are used to establish a films fan base and to tell their particular target audience that their film is coming out without giving away any significant plotline, teaser trailers are designed to not tell their target audience anything about the film apart from that it is coming out, they are designed to ‘tease’ their audience and make them want to find out more about the film making advertising much more effective. They then work on advertising the production with many other cross media products including a film trailer that generally comes out closer to the release date.

Teaser trailers are only usually used to advertise big budget, highly anticipated films that are either highly likely to attract a huge fan base or already come with one from either a sequel or from a TV series or a book or comic book series.
